Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received the United Kingdom’s Senior Defense Advisor for the Middle East and North Africa, Lieutenant-General Sir John Lorimer, and his accompanying delegation, in Erbil on Wednesday. Sir John Lorimer arrived in Erbil to pay a farewell visit to the President of the Kurdistan Region.
At the meeting, which was also attended by the UK Ambassador to Iraq, Stephen Hickey, the general situation in the country and the wider region were discussed. The two sides stressed the need and importance of the continuation of coordination and cooperation in order to safeguard peace and stability in the wider region. Sir Lorimer reaffirmed the continuation of the UK support to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and expressed his country’s gratitude and appreciation for the joint work and partnership with the Kurdistan Region and Iraq; especially as partners in the international coalition to fight ISIS.
For his part, the President expressed gratitude to UK cooperation and support of the Kurdistan Region and wished Lieutenant-General Sir Lorimer success.
The two sides also shed light on the latest developments in the fight against terrorism and ISIS, the Erbil-Baghdad relations, and the current talks between them aimed at resolving the existing disagreements. The passage and approval of the Fiscal Deficit Bridge Law by Iraq’s Council of Representatives, the security situation along Kurdistan Region’s borders as well as other issues of mutual interest were also discussed at the meeting.
