Kurdistan Region President receives United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Iraq

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Iraq Stephen Hickey in Erbil on Wednesday.

The meeting shed light on the relations of the Kurdistan Region and Iraq with the United Kingdom, the general situation in the country, the existing economic difficulties, as well as ways to surpass the current economic crises. The ongoing negotiations between Erbil and Baghdad aimed at resolving the pending disagreements between the two sides, terror threats, and the mission of the international coalition to defeat ISIS were also discussed.

The President and the Ambassador reaffirmed their readiness to continue their cooperation and strengthening of mutual ties, especially in the economic fields. President Nechirvan Barzani said that the UK and the international community can help Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in building institutions and stabilization efforts.

The Ambassador expressed his country’s support for the progress in the Erbil-Baghdad negotiations and hoped that the two sides reach agreements on all pending issues.

The President emphasized that the key to peace and stability in the country is the resolution of all the disagreements between Erbil and Baghdad and also all other internal problems in Iraq.

The latest developments on the COVID-19 pandemic, its implications, and containment efforts were also discussed at the meeting, as well as the general situation in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq’s relations with the neighboring countries, and other issues of mutual interest.
