Erbil, Kurdistan Region, April 21,2020
Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani congratulates all journalists on Kurdistan Journalism Day. Below is the statement:
I congratulate all journalists in the Kurdistan Region as we mark the 122nd anniversary of the publication of the first Kurdish newspaper titled, “Kurdistan,” which was first printed by the renowned literary figure, Miqdad Baderkhan. I also offer my best wishes to journalists in Kurdistan as they mark the 22nd anniversary of the establishment of the Kurdistan Journalists Union.
We mark this day at a time when Kurdistan and the world are still facing the threats of COVID-19 pandemic. Journalists and reporters have played an important role and deserve praise for publishing information on how to avoid infection and how to follow protective measures. We hope this vicious virus is eradicated as quickly as possible in Kurdistan and the world.
Once again on this occasion, we reiterate our support to journalists and free media. We also expect that journalists live up to their professional and ethical responsibilities. We hope that the media and journalists remain a reliable source of information and knowledge while they also seek to safeguard peace and stability in society and the higher national interests. On this day, we salute the memory of the fallen journalists who sacrificed their lives in pursuit of truth and a free press in Kurdistan.
I congratulate all journalists and I hope we mark this day next year in much better conditions.
