Erbil, Kurdistan Region, March 16, 2021
Today, 33 years have passed since the Iraqi Ba’ath regime chemically attacked the city of Halabja, killing more than 5000 innocent civilians, wounding thousands and displacing many more.
As we commemorate this unforgettable national tragedy, we pay tribute to the fallen heroes and the victims, and emphasize on unity and consensus among all communities in Kurdistan, which is what our people and fallen heroes fought for.
On this occasion, we reaffirm that Halabja and its residents need much stronger support and better public services. The wounded and the families of the victims deserve genuine care and broader assistance.
We urge the Iraqi government to implement its legal and moral obligations and compensate the residents of Halabja, which suffered at the hands of former Iraqi governments. The chemical attack continues to have a devastating impact on the environment of the city and its neighboring areas.
As we remember the Halabja calamity, we urge the international community to further ban and prevent the use of chemical weapons. The world must stand united in their efforts to eradicate weapons of mass destruction.
We honor and remember the victims of Halabja chemical attack and all the fallen heroes who continue to live in our memory.
