On the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in Germany today, President Nechirvan Barzani and Prime Minister Masrour Barzani met with Mr. Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
At the meeting, after presenting an overview of the latest developments in Iraq’s political arena, the President and the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region thanked the United Nations for their support of Iraq, and in particular they praised the role of UNAMI in the Iraqi parliamentary elections, expressing their hope for the continuation of the support from the United Nations to resolve the existing problems of Iraq.
Discussions also focused on the latest developments in the fight against terrorism and the continued threats posed by ISIS, underlining that ISIS still poses a serious and real threat to the security and stability in Iraq and Syria.
In this context, the importance of cooperation between Erbil and Baghdad in confronting terrorism was highlighted, and it was emphasized that all sides should work to restore security and stability in Iraq, since instability undermines the political process, and that the United Nations can provide assistance and support to maintain stability.
Discussions also included the Kurdistan Region’s willingness to hold the parliamentary elections on time, the recent decision of the Iraqi Federal Supreme Court on the oil and gas law in the Kurdistan Region, and the likelihood of the visit of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to Iraq after the formation of the new federal government in Baghdad were highlighted.
