Erbil, Kurdistan Region, March 14, 2022
President Nechirvan Barzani received the Prime Minister of Iraq, Mr. Mustafa Kadhimi and his accompanying high-level delegation, in Erbil today.
The meeting covered a wide range of pressing issues including the latest political and security developments in Iraq, and Sunday’s missile attack on Erbil, which Iran’s Revolutionary Guards later claimed responsibility for.
The President and the Prime Minister underscored that the attack is an alarming development, a flagrant violation of Iraq’s sovereignty, and an unwarranted aggression which endangers Iraq’s security, peace and stability.
Mr. Kadhimi expressed his deep concerns over the attack on Erbil. The Prime Minister said that he came to show solidarity with Erbil and to express his support for the Kurdistan Region, hoping any disagreements would be resolved through dialogue.
With regard to the claim that the attack allegedly targeted an Israeli base, President Nechirvan Barzani denied there were any Israeli bases in the Kurdistan Region, rejecting the claim and calling it a baseless pretext.
The President thanked Prime Minister Kadhimi and described his visit to Erbil as support and solidarity with the Kurdistan Region. The President reaffirmed that the Kurdistan Region remains a factor of stability, valuing their mutual relations with the neighboring countries.
Reaffirming their joint partnership, both sides underlined that the outcome of the investigation from the Iraqi Federal Government and the Kurdistan Regional Government’s joint committee be made public.
