Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met with the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Iraq, Ms. Jeanine Hennis- Plasschaert, in Baghdad on Wednesday.

The two sides discussed the latest developments in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, Erbil-Baghdad relations, as well as the recent talks on the issue of the Kurdistan Region’s share of the Iraqi national budget and the salaries of the government employees.

President Nechirvan Barzani underlined the role of the United Nations in Iraq and its contributions to the negotiation process between Erbil and Baghdad aimed at a conclusive resolution to the disagreements between the two sides in accordance with the constitution.

The President also shed light on the latest report by the representative of the United Nations’ Secretary-General to the UN Security Council on the importance of implementing the constitution and the federal system in Iraq.

Both sides also discussed the latest developments on the COVID-19 pandemic and ways to contain it, the upcoming Iraqi elections and the election law, and the situation of the refugees and displaced people in the camps hosted by the Kurdistan Region.
