President Nechirvan Barzani welcomed Vice Admiral Edward Ahlgren, the UK Defence Senior Advisor to the Middle East and North Africa (DSAME), along with his delegation. He was accompanied by several advisors and the British Consul General in the Kurdistan Region.
During the meeting, which included the Chief of Staff of the Peshmerga, discussions focused on the security situation in Iraq, the Kurdistan Region, and the broader region, as well as relations between Erbil and Baghdad. They also emphasized the security threats posed by ISIS and the implications for regional peace and stability.
President Nechirvan Barzani underscored that ISIS continues to pose a significant threat to peace and stability in both Iraq and Syria. Regarding the drone attacks targeting the Kurdistan Region, he described the assaults on energy infrastructure as a threat that could harm the entire Iraqi economy and urged action to prevent such attacks.
Mr. Ahlgren, for his part, reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to strengthening relations and cooperation with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. He highlighted the importance the UK places on achieving peace and stability in the region. Additionally, he conveyed the UK’s support for maintaining security and stability in Iraq, the Kurdistan Region, and the wider region.
The meeting also covered topics such as the federal system in Iraq, relations between Iraq and the Kurdistan Region with neighboring countries, the situation in Syria, the rights of Kurds and other communities there, and the latest developments in the peace process in Türkiye.
