Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received Mrs. Françoise Dumas, Chair of the National and Military Defense Committee in the French Parliament and her accompanying delegation that included Mr. Philippe Meyer and Mr. Gwendal Rouillard, Members of France’s Parliament, Mr. Bruno Aubert, the Ambassador of France to Iraq, and Mr. Olivier Decottignies, France’s Consul General in Erbil.
Discussions focused on the latest security developments in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, ISIS terrorist operations, the important role of the French forces and the International Coalition in supporting Iraq and the Kurdistan Region to confront terrorism. It was reaffirmed that ISIS still poses a great threat to the regional security. Iraq and the Kurdistan Region continue to need the support of the International Coalition to eliminate the terror network.
President Nechirvan Barzani offered the gratitude of the people of Kurdistan to France for its consistent humanitarian, political and military support of the Kurdistan Region during difficult times. The President expressed hope that France will continue to support Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and commended President Emmanuel Macron’s efforts to resolve the pending disagreements in Iraq and to preserve stability and security in the country.
The visiting delegation praised the role of the Peshmarga and the Kurdistan Region in defeating ISIS and hosting large numbers of displaced people and refugees in the Kurdistan Region. The delegation commended the peaceful coexistence of all communities in Kurdistan and reiterated that France looks forward to developing stronger bonds of friendship and partnership with the Kurdistan Region and Iraq and values the important contribution of the Kurdistan Region to the stability of Iraq and the wider region. The delegation underlined the need for the continuing joint work in many areas and described the Kurdistan Region as a crucial factor for regional stability and security.
Discussions also covered the relations of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region with the countries in the region and the world, the Iraq's upcomming elections, the ongoing dialogue to resolve the disputes between Erbil and Baghdad.
The ways to establish and manage effective cooperation mechanisms between the Peshmerga and the Iraqi army in the disputed territories, the situation in Syria and other topics of mutual interest were highlighted.
