President Nechirvan Barzani spoke by phone with French President Emmanuel Macron to offer his strong condemnation of the terrorist attack that struck the joint Peshmerga-French military base in Makhmour last night. The assault claimed the life of a French officer and left several others wounded. French forces have been stationed at the base as part of the international Coalition against ISIS.
President Nechirvan Barzani extended his heartfelt condolences to President Macron, the people and government of France, as well as to the family and friends of the French soldier who lost his life while protecting security and combating terrorism in the Kurdistan Region. He emphasized that our thoughts are with them during this difficult time and wished a swift recovery to those injured.
President Nechirvan Barzani expressed his appreciation for France’s continued support and contributions in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, paying tribute to the sacrifices of French military personnel serving there. He stressed that the Iraqi government must fulfill its obligations to prevent future attacks, bring those responsible to justice, and safeguard both the country’s national interests and its standing with the international community.
President Macron expressed his gratitude for the condolences extended by President Nechirvan Barzani and the people of Kurdistan following their phone conversation. He further affirmed that France remains committed to supporting both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.
