President Nechirvan Barzani meets with Belgium’s Defense and Foreign Affairs Minister Goffin

On Monday February 3, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received Mr. Philippe Goffin, Belgium’s Minister of Defense and Foreign Affairs.

In the meeting, President Barzani expressed gratitude and appreciation to Belgium for supporting the Kurdistan Region as part of the international coalition and reiterated that Iraq and the Kurdistan Region still need global coalition’s continued engagement to counter terrorism.

The Kurdistan Region vice presidents and Belgium’s ambassador to Iraq and Jordan were also present at the meeting along with a joint delegation from the Belgian foreign and defense ministries. In the meeting, the president underlined that the Kurdistan Region is willing to resolve all the outstanding issues with Iraq on the basis of the Iraqi Constitution. The president also reiterated Kurdistan Region’s support for the Iraqi demonstrators’ demands for better services and higher standards of living.

Belgium’s minister of defense and foreign affairs said that his country views the peace and stability in Iraq, Kurdistan Region and the wider region as highly important and commended the role of the Kurdistan Region in the war against terror while praising its efforts towards stability, peace, coexistence and tolerance in the country. Minister Goffin expressed gratitude to the people and government of the Kurdistan Region for embracing the displaced people and protecting ethnic and religious communities.

The president and the minister also spoke about expanding bilateral relations, the status and fate of the ISIS prisoners and their families and children in the camps, especially in Syria.
