President Nechirvan Barzani meets with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte

At the Munich Security Conference, President Nechirvan Barzani met with Mr. Mark Rutte, Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Their discussions focused on Iraq's security situation, regional developments, and the importance of strengthening NATO’s cooperation and partnership with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, particularly in counterterrorism efforts and security force training.

President Nechirvan Barzani expressed the Kurdistan Region’s gratitude for NATO’s support in enhancing the defense capabilities of the Peshmerga forces and emphasized the importance of continued support to safeguard stability and security in the region.

For his part, Mr. Rutte reaffirmed NATO’s commitment to supporting Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. He also highlighted the significance of cooperation with the Kurdistan Region in ensuring Iraq’s stability and security and in countering terrorist threats in the region.

The situation in Syria and developments in the Middle East were also key topics of discussion during the meeting.
