Continuing his meetings in Germany today on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, President Nechirvan Barzani met with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s (NATO) Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoană.
The President gave a brief overview of the security and political situation in Iraq in which he referred to the threats posed by ISIS in Iraq and Syria, referring to the the cooperation and coordination between the Peshmarga and Iraqi army, especially in areas with security vacuum.
Mr. Geoană highlighted the NATO mission in Iraq, underlying the importance of NATO representative in Iraq to support and provide military training as ISIS remains a threat and the Ukrainian tensions should not take the attention away from the terror threats in the region.
The President referred to the presence of NATO in Iraq as an important pillar and reiterated that Iraq and the Kurdistan Region need to develop military and security capabilities and hoped for the NATO’s support.
