President Nechirvan Barzani reiterated that terror and the resurgence of ISIS is a genuine danger that poses a threat to the stability of Iraq and the region. The president also emphasized that Iraq and Kurdistan Region still need the cooperation and support from the global coalition in confronting ISIS.
On Wednesday January 15, Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received a high level British military delegation headed by Lieutenant General Sir John Lorimer, who is a senior advisor for the Middle Eastern affairs at UK Ministry of Defense and a representative of the British Prime Minister. The British Ambassador to Iraq and Kurdistan Region’s Vice Presidents, the British Consul General in Erbil and a group of British military officers also attended the meeting in which the security situation in Iraq and the recent events and crises were discussed.
The recent increase of ISIS movements in the disputed areas in Iraq and the importance of coordination and cooperation between the Peshmarga and the Iraqi army to confront ISIS and the role of the global coalition in the war against terror were also discussed. The two sides also spoke about the de-escalation of tensions, the Baghdad-Erbil relations, and the relations between Kurdistan Region and the United Kingdom, and the continuation of the British support for Iraq and the Kurdistan region was highlighted.
