Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met with the President of Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council, Faiq Zidan, in Erbil on Tuesday.
The meeting covered Iraq’s judiciary system and its legal authorities, as well as the work and the missions of the Supreme Judicial Council and the Federal Court. The two sides also exchanged views on cooperation and coordination between the Council of Justice in the Kurdistan Region and its counterpart in Iraq. President Nechirvan Barzani and Judge Faiq Zidan reiterated the significance of preserving the independence of the judiciary system, devoid of political influence.
Both sides also commended the existing cooperation and coordination between the judiciary systems in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, considering the special status of the Kurdistan Region.
The meeting was attended by the Head of the Kurdistan Region’s Council of Justice and the Kurdistan Region’s Minister of Justice. Both sides discussed the structures of the Federal Court, its work and mission, as well as the mechanism of finalizing the process of nomination for new Supreme Court members, in accordance with the constitutional procedures. Both sides also reiterated the importance of coordination between the relevant authorities in this regard.
President Nechirvan Barzani expressed his support and appreciation for the cooperation and coordination between the judicial authorities in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. The President also expressed hope that Iraq’s judiciary institutions will continue to support their counterparts in the Kurdistan Region in the fields of education and training.
