Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received a delegation from the Union of Islamic Religious Scholars of Kurdistan in Erbil on Tuesday.
At the meeting, attended by the Minister of Endowments and Religious Affairs, the importance of the Union of Islamic Religious Scholars of Kurdistan was underlined and its vital role in promoting peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among all religions and communities in the Kurdistan Region was highlighted.
The Union of the Islamic Religious Scholars of Kurdistan reiterated its support for the efforts of President Nechirvan Barzani and the Kurdistan Region Presidency to bring together parties and communities in Kurdistan, and commended the efforts to draft the Kurdistan Region’s Constitution. The Union underlined the importance of drafting the Constitution based on citizenship, considering Islam as one of its sources, recognizing the rights and freedoms of other religions, and refraining from politicizing religion.
The President referred to the religious nature of the Kurdistani community, in which religious scholars have a significant influence and a critical role in instilling the spirit of coexistence, the culture of tolerance, civil peace and preventing the rise of extremist ideologies in Kurdistan.
Cooperation and coordination between the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs and the Union of Islamic Religious Scholars in Kurdistan, the status of the Council of Religious Sermons, religious scholars and their living conditions and the status of religious studies in the Kurdistan Region were highlighted.
