President Nechirvan Barzani meets with UN Special Representative Plasschaert

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met with the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Iraq, Jeanine Hennis- Plasschaert, on Tuesday.
In the meeting, which was also attended by the representative of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Adham Ismail, the political developments in Iraq and the current efforts to form the next Iraqi cabinet were discussed. The two sides also discussed the ongoing efforts to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

President Nechirvan Barzani reiterated that the Kurdistan Region supports Iraqi Prime Minister designate, Mr. Mustafa Al-Kadhimi and expressed hope that Mr. Al-Kadhimi would be able to form his cabinet before the deadline. The president also expressed appreciation to the UN representative in Iraq for providing assistance to Iraqi political parties in the process of forming the next cabinet and alleviating tensions in the country.

The two sides also spoke about the current economic situation in the country and the recent Iraqi decision to withhold the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG)’s share of the federal budget including salaries of the employees in Kurdistan. The president said that the KRG budget and salaries must not be politicized and that Baghdad’s decision is unconstitutional and unlawful. The president asked the UN Special Representative to mediate in resolving the ongoing dispute.

The latest developments in COVID-19 outbreak and the containment efforts in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region were also discussed. Ms. Plasschaert and Dr. Adham commended the KRG’s response to the pandemic and praised the ongoing containment measures. The president thanked the WHO for coordination with the KRG in their response to the corona outbreak.
