President Nechirvan Barzani received a delegation from the German Parliament (Bundestag) today in Erbil, which included members of parliament, Mr. Qassim Tahir Salih, Mr. Max Lucks, their aides and the German Acting Consul General in the Kurdistan Region.
The meeting focused on a wide range of issues, among them: the relations between the Kurdistan Region and Germany, the developments in the Kurdistan Region, Erbil-Baghdad ties, the environment, the impact of climate change and its ramifications for Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, human rights issues, equality, youths, civil liberties and freedom of expression.
President Nechirvan Barzani emphasized that despite the flaws and limitations regarding the important issues of civil liberties, promotion of women’s rights and equality of opportunity, the Kurdistan Region is on the right path and will continue towards a better future with the positive steps already taken in this direction. The President welcomed observations and assistance of friends from the international community in this regard.
For their part, the guest delegation stressed that Germany attaches importance to the friendship and position of the Kurdistan Region and views it as an important partner. The delegation also pointed to the significance of culture of coexistence, unity and tolerance among the communities in the Kurdistan Region.
