President Nechirvan Barzani receives Denmark's Ambassador to Iraq

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received the Ambassador of Denmark to Iraq, Mr. Stig Paolo Pires.

Ambassador Pires expressed his country’s deepest sympathy to the Kurdistan Region and the victims of the terrorist rocket attack that targeted Erbil on Monday.

Iraq and the Kurdistan Region’s bilateral relations with Denmark, Erbil-Baghdad talks, the Iraq 2021 budget draft including Kurdistan Region’s share and the upcoming elections in the country were discussed.

Discussions also focused on the role of the United Nations and the international community in supporting Iraq to surpass the current crises and security challenges.

President Nechirvan Barzani congratulated the Ambassador for reopening consular services at Denmark’s Embassy in Baghdad and described it as an important step in the direction of assisting Iraq. The President also thanked Denmark for supporting Iraq and the Kurdistan Region as part of the international coalition, particularly the training of the Iraqi army and the Peshmerga forces within the framework of NATO mission in the country. The president expressed hope that Denmark continues to support and work with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, and welcomed Danish investments in the Region.

Other topics of discussion covered the importance of preserving security and maintaining coordination between Iraq and the Kurdistan Region’s security institutions in the disputed territories, the containment of the COVID-19 pandemic and the mass vaccination efforts in the country.
