President Nechirvan Barzani receives Finland’s Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received Finland’s Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto in Erbil on Thursday.

At their meeting, Finland’s relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and ways to strengthen bilateral ties at all levels were discussed. The two sides exchanged views about Baghdad-Erbil relations, their pending issues, the ongoing talks aimed at resolving their differences and the importance of the participation of all Iraqi communities in the political process to achieve stability in the country.

President Nechirvan Barzani and Foreign Minister Haavisto also shed light on the latest developments with the war against terror, the role of the international coalition and the significance of their continued support to Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in confronting terrorism. The latest on the COVID-19 outbreak and its wide impacts on the economy, the Kurdistan Region’s relations with the neighboring countries, the situation of the refugees and the displaced people and the coexistence among communities in the Kurdistan Region were also highlighted.

The President expressed delight at the visit of Foreign Minister Haavisto and thanked Finland for assisting the Kurdistan Region as part of the international coalition against ISIS, particularly in areas of capacity-building, training of the Peshmerga forces and provision of humanitarian assistance. The President expressed the Kurdistan Region’s willingness to further expand relations with Finland in all fields and welcomed Finland’s businesses to invest in the Region.

On his part, Mr. Haavisto expressed happiness for visiting Erbil and conveyed the appreciation of his country for the role of the Kurdistan Region in defeating ISIS and confronting terrorism. The Foreign Minister commended the Region for welcoming and granting a safe haven to large numbers of refugees and internally displaced people. He also expressed his country’s readiness to strengthen relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, broaden areas of mutual cooperation and consider opening his country’s Consulate General in Erbil.
