Congratulatory messages

March 8, 2025

I offer my heartfelt congratulations to all women in Kurdistan, Iraq, and around the world on the March 8th celebration of International Women's Day. I wish them ongoing success and progress in pursuing justice and equality. I reaffirm my unwavering support for their vital role in creating a more liberated, fair, and progressive society.

Historically, women in Kurdistan have demonstrated remarkable bravery, resilience, and readiness in political struggles and resistance, as well as in many aspects of life. They have played a crucial role in the movement for freedom in Kurdistan and are actively involved in politics, economics, administration, and education today, making significant contributions to all areas of society. While we take pride in the status and achievements of women in Kurdistan, we also acknowledge that more comprehensive efforts are necessary to protect their rights, shield them from violence and discrimination, and improve their status across all sectors.

It is a collective responsibility to eliminate violence against women, uphold their rights, and cultivate an environment that encourages their equal involvement in all aspects of life. It falls upon each of us—individuals, families, educational institutions, and society as a whole—to enhance our efforts to ensure that Kurdistan embodies equality, justice, and human rights. As we have consistently stated, the formation of a democratic and progressive society is unattainable without safeguarding women's rights and freedoms, as well as reinforcing their roles and positions in every field.

On this significant occasion, we honor the memory of all women who have made profound sacrifices, as well as those who have faced violence and extremism. We reaffirm our steadfast commitment to fostering a culture of coexistence, tolerance, and equality. We will work diligently to create a society where women are true partners in shaping the future.

We pay tribute to all women who advocate for their rights, and acknowledge the resilience of those who have endured violence. I wish everyone a happy International Women’s Day.

Nechirvan Barzani
President of the Kurdistan Region
