Erbil, Kurdistan Region, March 5, 2021
The President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, issued the following statement on the 30the anniversary of the Uprising in Kurdistan:
On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Uprising of the people of Kurdistan, we salute the fallen heroes of Kurdistan’s liberation and pay tribute to their memories.
We salute the resilience of all communities in Kurdistan who rose up against oppression and dictatorship 30 years ago today and, together with our brave Peshmerga, liberated all villages and towns in Kurdistan, starting in the great city of Raniya on March 5. 1991.
Today as we remember these sacred days and our heroes, we recognize more than ever that Kurdistan needs tolerance, consensus and unity among all its parties and communities to safeguard the important achievements of the Uprising.
During the Uprising, all national, religious and political components of Kurdistan were untied in one strong front against oppression. Today, we can face the challenges and the hardships together with the same spirit and preserve our constitutional rights.
On this grand occasion, I urge all parties and sides in Kurdistan to celebrate this hard-earned freedom by embracing unity and peace, and work together for a stable and prosperous Kurdistan and ensure that Kurdistan will remain a cradle of freedom, tolerance, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among all communities.
