Honorable relatives, friends and comrades of Dr. Roj Nuri Shawes,
It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Dr. Roj Nuri Shawes, the Peshmarga commander, renowned politician and the politburo member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP). I extend my heartfelt condolences to you and to the people of Kurdistan, and I share your grief.
As a Peshmarga, Dr. Roj served as the commander of major battles. He was a courageous Peshmarga, whose bravery has been witnessed by many of his comrades. As a politician, he was a patient and successful negotiator who always found a way to make lasting agreements without compromising on the rights of the people of Kurdistan. He was admired and greatly respected by the supporters and the leadership of the KDP and all the political parties in Kurdistan.
While serving as the prime minister, and later, as the speaker of the parliament of Kurdistan Region, Dr. Roj played a major role in completing the projects and passing of crucial bills for the people of Kurdistan. As Iraq’s deputy prime minister, his role was undeniable in preserving the rights of the people of Kurdistan. Throughout his career, Dr. Roj remained a true patriot in all the positions that he held.
When Dr. Roj became prime minister of Kurdistan in late 1990s, I had the privilege to serve as his deputy in his cabinet and learned immensely from his experience and expertise. Dr. Roj and the veteran leaders of the KDP were major sources of support and guidance for me after my father passed away. Dr. Roj and all the veteran KDP members, who are deeply respected, contributed immeasurably to the Kurdistan liberation movement during the most difficult times.
Dr. Roj Nuri Shawes, who came from a prominent family of activists, intellectuals and Peshmerga fighters in Sulaimani, served the people of Kurdistan wholeheartedly. His departure is a great loss for all the people of Kurdistan. He will live forever in our memory and the memory of his friends, companions, and the people of Kurdistan as a devoted and compassionate advocate of the rights of the people of Kurdistan.
May he rest in peace and God Almighty grant comfort and patience to his family, friends and the people of Kurdistan.
