Following his meeting with France President Emmanuel Macron, in his remarks to the press, the President of Kurdistan Region Nechirvan Barzani said “We had a good meeting with President Macron. As you know, after the referendum, France and especially President Macron played a significant role in diplomatically opening doors on Kurdistan, which was an important step at the time. This enabled us resolving some issues with Baghdad”.
Later in his remarks, President Barzani said “After assuming my official duty as the President of the Kurdistan Region, I was invited again by Élysée Palace for a visit”
We had a good meeting, in which we expressed our appreciation to President Macron and France’s role in assisting us mending relations with Baghdad. This was one of the main points we discussed with President Macron. Additionally, we discussed ways of strengthening relations between the Kurdistan Region and Paris on political level and economy level.
We thanked France for their role in supporting Peshmerga forces in the fight against Da’esh. We also, thanked France for their humanitarian support to the refugees and displaced persons. We decided to seek developing economy and political relations.
In his response to one of the questions on the relations between Erbil and Paris, President Barzani stated “We want to strengthen our relations in all fields, because as we mentioned France had a significant role [in assisting Kurdistan]. We want to improve our relations in all fields, especially economy and political relations”
Regarding President Macron’s visit to the Kurdistan Region, President Barzani stated that “We invited President Macron to visit the Kurdistan Region when he visits Iraq. With much pleasure, he accepted the invitation. We hope he visits the Kurdistan Region, while he visits Iraq”.
On President Macron’s opinion on the formation of ninth cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government, President Barzani said “He expressed his delight to hear that the ninth cabinet of Kurdistan Regional Government is sworn in. He hoped that the new cabinet will be successful in its job”
