The Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani issued a statement on the outbreak of the coronavirus and commended government departments, law enforcement agencies, and the public for containing the spread of the virus. Below is the full statement:

My fellow citizens of Kurdistan,

As the world is currently facing the threat of coronavirus outbreak, international organizations and countries around the world are taking serious measures to contain the spread of this virus. Experience from other countries has shown that basic protective measures and cleanliness are the most effective ways to reduce the infection risks.

I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation to the Kurdistan Regional Government for their preventive measures against the spread of this virus. It is our duty to help and support the government in this very important mission.

I would also like to extend my appreciation to the relevant ministries, doctors, nurses, medical teams and the entire healthcare personnel who have worked together against this outbreak. And I thank the police, security forces, airports and border crossings employees, city councils and municipalities across the Kurdistan Region who have worked tirelessly to contain further outbreak. I would also like to urge the international community and relevant organizations to assist Kurdistan contain this virus.

My fellow citizens,

It is possible to protect ourselves and our communities from this infection if we collectively take responsibility to protect our communities. It is important that we handle the current situation with great care. Fear and negligence should be avoided as we confront the virus. It is imperative that all of us follow the instructions and preventive measures that were issued by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the government in order to control the outbreak.

Everyone has a responsibility to protect themselves, their families, their communities and their environment. I expect that all my fellow Kurdistani citizens realize their responsibilities and see it as their personal, collective, religious and moral obligation to protect themselves and others.

This difficult time will pass and we will protect ourselves and our country, as we cooperate and coordinate on every level and implement the preventive procedures. We will also continue to coordinate with the WHO, relevant Iraqi authorities and the international community.

I wish the people of Kurdistan, Iraq, neighboring countries and around the world good health and well-being.
