Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received the United States’ Ambassador to Iraq, Mr. Matthew Tueller, in Erbil on Monday.
Discussions covered a number of topics, including the third round of the Iraqi-American strategic dialogue that took place last week with the participation of the Kurdistan Region, and the future of the US-Iraqi relations within the framework of dialogue. Both sides reiterated their willingness to strengthen the relations of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region with the United States on the basis of mutual interests.
During the meeting, which was attended by the US Consul General in Erbil, Mr. Robert Waller, President Nechirvan Barzani’s three day visit to Baghdad was highlighted, including his separate meetings with leaders, senior officials, Iraqi political parties and groups. Both sides reaffirmed the need for further consensus and cooperation among all Iraqi political factions and communities in order to overcome the challenges and crises of the country and move towards a better future for Iraq.
The President and the Ambassador referred to the passage of the Budget Bill in Iraq’s parliament, described it as a positive step and expressed hope that the passage would become an opportunity to bring about common grounds between Erbil and Baghdad and help resolve the outstanding issues between the two sides on the basis of the constitution.
The COVID-19 pandemic and the vaccination process against the virus, the upcoming elections process and preparations in Iraq, and the developments in the wider region were also highlighted during the meeting.
