President Nechirvan Barzani received the US Ambassador to Iraq, Mr. Matthew Tueller, and the US Consul General in Erbil, Mr. Rob Waller.
The importance of US diplomatic, development and defense relations with the Kurdistan Region and Iraq was reaffirmed.
Ambassador Tueller indicated the new US administration values its relations with the Kurdistan Region and Iraq and will continue cooperation and coordination with allies to strengthen peace and progress. He commended the Region for its achievements during the past three decades despite severe threats and formidable challenges.
Discussions also focused on developing an environment favorable to the US and other foreign investment that is rooted in law, rights, and international banking standards.
Other topics discussed included security - especially persistent terrorism, the status of Erbil-Baghdad agreements, Peshmerga and Iraqi military cooperation, importance and status of ethnic and religious communities, continued support of the US-led international military coalition, refugees and IDPs, relations among the Region’s political parties, and the safeguarding of freedom of expression and an independent media.
