Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani met with the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Iraq, Jeanine Hennis- Plasschaert in Baghdad on Saturday.
Discussions focused on the political, economic and security situation in Iraq, Erbil-Baghdad relations and dialogue to solve their pending disputes, the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Iraqi Federal Government’s agreement on the status of Shingal, the upcoming Iraqi elections, the dangers of terrorism and the threats of ISIS.
In addition to presenting an overview of the program and objectives of his visit to Baghdad, President Nechirvan Barzani stressed the importance of the supportive role of the United Nations’ team in Iraq, which is holding talks with all sides and parties and is willing, within the framework of its missions in Iraq, to help solve the disagreements.
For her part, Ms. Plasschaert expressed her satisfaction with the continuation of the Erbil-Baghdad dialogue and hoped that the Kurdistan Region and Iraq would reach through dialogue and on the basis of the constitution a solution to their problems, and that the Iraqi parties would cooperate together to overcome the situation in order to achieve security and stability.
