President Nechirvan Barzani held a meeting with United States’ Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the second day of the Munich Security Conference.
The discussions focused on enhancing the strategic partnership between the US, Iraq, and the Kurdistan Region, addressing the security landscape, and tackling the threats posed by terrorism, particularly ISIS in Iraq and Syria.
President Barzani expressed appreciation for the unwavering support from the United States towards Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, particularly in combating terrorism and fostering security and stability. He underscored the significance of maintaining this cooperative relationship with the US.
Additionally, President Barzani extended an invitation to Secretary Rubio to attend the inauguration of the new US Consulate General building in Erbil, to which the Secretary expressed his enthusiasm to participate.
Secretary Rubio reaffirmed the United States' commitment as an ally, highlighting the importance of its relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. He emphasized the necessity of ongoing security and military collaboration to confront shared challenges and promote economic growth and development.
The meeting also addressed recent developments in the region, particularly concerning Syria and the situation of the Kurdish people there.
