Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received Ambassador James Jeffrey, Special Representative for Syria Engagement and Special Envoy to the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, in Erbil on Tuesday.
In the meeting, which was attended by the Kurdistan Region Minister of Peshmerga, Chief of Staff of the Peshmerga Forces, and Head of the Department of Foreign Affairs of the Kurdistan Region. Both sides exchanged views about the latest developments in Syria and the wider region. The International Coalition’s mission against ISIS, confronting the threats and activities of terror networks in Syria and Iraq were also discussed, as well as the situation for the Kurds in Syria and talks among Kurdish factions in the country aimed at resolving differences and maintaining unity.
Ambassador Jeffery reaffirmed the continued support of the United States and the Global Coalition to the Kurds in the fight against terror networks and the complete elimination of ISIS in Syria, the Kurdistan Region, and Iraq, as well as supporting the Peshmerga and the Iraqi forces with all necessary means.
Mr. Jeffery expressed the United States support to the ongoing negotiations among Kurdish parties in Syria and appreciated the positive role of President Nechirvan Barzani and the Kurdistan Region in the efforts to bring together the negotiating parties and encouraging them to solve their disagreements.
On his part, the President conveyed his appreciation to the United States and the International Coalition against ISIS for their continued support and cooperation. The President reiterated the importance of the International Coalition’s mission for the Kurdistan Region and Iraq until the complete elimination of ISIS networks in the region.
The COVID-19 pandemic, its wide-ranging implications in Syria, the Kurdistan Region and Iraq, ways to contain and confront the outbreak were highlighted in the meeting. Both sides discussed the relations between Erbil and Baghdad, as well as the Kurdish question in Syria.
The two sides also discussed the presence of foreign powers in Syria, the latest efforts to maintain stability, and other issues of mutual interest.
