On the 37th anniversary of the Badinan Anfal, we honor the memory of all the martyrs of Badinan and the Kurdistan Region. Today, as a number of the remains of the victims are laid to rest in a ceremony near Gara, following official legal and medical procedures, we are reminded once again of the oppression against them.

The Badinan Anfal was another chapter in the chain of crimes committed by the former Iraqi regime against the people of Kurdistan. Between August 25 and September 6, 1988, during the final stage of the Anfal campaign, the regime targeted civilians, land, air, environment, and nature in Badinan.

On this occasion, we once again urge the Federal Government of Iraq to take serious steps to recognize and honor the victims of the Badinan Anfal and all crimes committed by the former regime. The Iraqi High Tribunal has recognized the Anfal campaign as genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity; therefore, the rights of the victims must be restored in every possible way.

Iraq's troubled history has only resulted in suffering for both the country and its citizens. The Anfal campaign and all atrocities perpetrated against the people of Kurdistan should act as significant lessons and cautionary tales, guaranteeing the protection of the rights of the people of Kurdistan and all other communities.

On this anniversary, we emphasize the need for resolving outstanding issues, fostering peaceful coexistence, protecting stability and security, and strengthening cooperation among all political parties and components in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, so that together we can build a better future.

Glory to the pure souls of the martyrs of the Badinan Anfal and all the martyrs of Kurdistan.

Nechirvan Barzani
President of the Kurdistan Region
